Upstream B1 Teachers Book

This book provides strategies for teaching pronunciation. The strategies are divided into five sections: breaking down sounds, stress, rhythm, intonation, and linking sounds together. The aim of the book is to teach ESL students to speak English with a native accent, through analysis of the sounds in the language. Every chapter identifies a different phonetic characteristic. This can be either an individual sound or a combination of sounds. The book then explains how to teach these sounds, including exercises for practice. Finally, there are activities for creating fluency in speaking practice sessions. There are also audio files on CD which you can use in your lessons if you want to try out different techniques before using them in class. The audio files are particularly useful when you are planning your lesson or considering what activities to use during class time. For example, if you want to teach a group of students a new word, you can record yourself speaking it to the class, and play the recorded version for them at your lesson. If you do not have a group of students that speak different mother tongues or languages, then the audio files will allow you to practise with a native speaker. The content of this book is aimed at both beginner and intermediate level English learners. The exercises may be too difficult for beginners, but there are detailed explanations included in each chapter which make up for this lack of ease. For intermediate learners there is enough variety in the exercises to keep them interested, but there is still enough repetition so they retain their knowledge. It is clear from the way the book has been written that the author has extensive experience in teaching English as a foreign language, and is able to offer advice on different approaches that work for different students. This makes it ideal for use at college level, but it could also be used at high school level if you wanted to teach pronunciation as part of a regular English curriculum.
